Michael R. DuPont has resigned as borough attorney for Bradley Beach.

Mayor Gary Engelstad said DuPont decided to leave the position in order to spend more time with his family. The mayor cited the evening hours during which DuPont was required to attend municipal meetings as a particular factor in the decision.

DuPont is a principal in the Red Bank law firm of McKenna, DuPont, Higgins and Stone. He is a graduate of Loyola University of Chicago and John Marshall Law School.

DuPont served three three-year terms as a Democrat on the Red Bank Borough Council before losing in a close vote in 2015.

Engelstad said several attorneys will serve the borough on an interim basis.

A request for proposals to fill the slot will be issued at the council’s next meeting on June 26.

The current term of the borough attorney ends on Dec. 31.

DuPont received praise in April for his handling of the borough’s long battle with a landlord and operators of a drug and alcohol rehabilitation residence on the beachfront.

The attorney represented the borough as it met with a retired judge appointed to coordinate disputes between the sides.

The Tranquil and Quest rehab left the location at 811 Ocean Ave. earlier this year and property owner John Simone has listed the four oceanfront condominium units for sale.

DuPont cited the efforts of the borough administration and employees in teaming up to bring the matter to a successful conclusion. He also thanked borough residents for raising issues related to the facility with him so he could bring them to the judge’s attention.
