More than a month into the new school year, the Bradley Beach Board of Education has yet to act on an offer to station a police officer in the Bradley Beach Elementary School.
Councilman John Weber, the Borough Council’s liaison to the school district, urged residents interested in the matter to attend the board’s next meeting at the school on Tues., Oct. 16 at 7 p.m.
In May, Police Chief Leonard Guida presented a proposal to the board for an officer to be on the premises during the school day.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Stephen Wisniewski, who is also the principal of the school, said he met with the chief prior to the presentation to the board and that he was in favor of the idea.
Several board members expressed their concerns and wondered if they would have any say in choosing the officer.
Weber said the board is considering other possible safety measures including the use of some type of technology.
In other business the council authorized Borough Clerk Kelly Barrett to advertise for proposals from companies interested in producing events at the beginning and end of summer.
The borough’s Memorial Day Committee has ended its two-year relationship with Spark Market Solutions of Red Bank.
A successful bidder would have to pay the borough at least $43,000 to put on the two festivals. The winning bidder could rename the Labor Day weekend event, subject to the approval of the council.
Official bid documents will be available at the borough offices.
Sealed bids will be opened at the council’s Nov. 20 meeting.
Councilman Randy Bonnell said he will consult with state officials who are overseeing work on Route 71, which is Main Street in the borough. The state is bringing the road into compliance with the federal Americans with Disabilities Act.
Bonnell and several residents said that some of the work done so far is unsightly and seemingly oversized. The councilman said that ADA guidelines have been revised several times since they were first enacted and he will try to get an update from the state on the specifications for the work it is performing.
Weber said the Bradley Beach PTO will hold its annual fundraiser at the Columns in Avon on Fri., Oct. 19 from 6:30 to 11 p.m.
There will be a cleanup at Sylvan Lake Sat., Oct. 13 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers are welcome.
