Banning plastic bags and other single-use plastics in Neptune was on the Township Committee’s agenda this week but no action was taken on the matter.
“I know other (municipalities) have done this but I think it will be difficult. I don’t know how you would enforce it,” Committeeman Kevin McMillan said during the workshop session.
Mayor Carol Rizzo agreed, saying that she, too, sees enforcement as a problem.
“I can’t see us spending time to enforce this and I think we should look for leadership from state officials on this matter,” she said.
Township Attorney Gene Anthony said such bans are usually state initiatives and that he believes there would be “push back” from the police department if it were required to enforce such a ban.
“I don’t see us mustering the manpower to enforce it,” he said.
