The Asbury Park-Wall Elks Lodge No. 128 has received an Elks National Foundation Beacon Grant of $2,500 for a knitting and crocheting program to make items for needy children and homeless veterans.
The lodge is reaching out to residents in local communities for knitters and crocheters to provide them with yarn and necessary supplies for them to make scarfs for needy school children, lap blankets for veterans in nursing facilities and make afghans for homeless veterans when they are able to move into a home.
There are several elementary schools within the lodge’s jurisdictions with low income families who are unable to provide their children with proper winter accessories.
There are also several nursing facilities where veterans live who need new lap blankets.
There are more than 7,000 homeless veterans within the lodge’s districy and when they are lucky enough to get a home the lodge hopes to provide them with a welcome home gift of a homemade afghan that is handmade and has that very special meaning and importance.
