Two prospective investors are being vetted as possible partners in the stalled construction project at the former Giamano’s restaurant property in Bradley Beach.
Mayor Gary Engelstad shared the news with residents when the Borough Council met earlier this week.
Several years ago the borough approved construction in 2015 of a three-story, mixed-use building at the site with residential units on the upper floors and commercial space at ground level.
Demolition began seven months after the restaurant closed in January 2017. A steel frame was put up, but work stalled after the death of one of the partners who was also the main contractor on the building.
In other business, the mayor announced that National Make A Difference Day will be celebrated Sat., Oct. 26 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Bradley Beach Public Library.
The event honors volunteers and provides a chance for citizens to learn about volunteer opportunities.
Councilman Randy Bonnell noted that volunteerism across the state has decreased by 70 percent since the 1990s. He proposed that the council consider implementing a Length of Service Award Program, or LOSAP as is offered to volunteer first responders in nearby towns. The program offers a modest compensation upon completion of service.
Councilman Harold Cotler, a member of the borough First Aid Squad, suggested that the council look into small property tax breaks to help encourage volunteers.
Engelstad presented Amanda Wheeler with a certificate of appreciation for her volunteer work on the borough’s Environmental Commission. Wheeler and her husband are relocating to Arizona.
Frank Luna, external affairs consultant for Jersey Central Power and Light and a Bradley Beach resident, announced that the utility was contributing $1,000 to the borough’s Christmas lights display this year. Luna said he was committed to working with the borough and residents to make sure street lights remain in full operating condition.
Borough Administrator Kelly Barrett said that after a delay caused by state officials, the annual audit of borough income and expenditures is underway. She expects the audit to be presented to the council at an upcoming meeting.
