The three-alarm fire burned the top floor of a three-story building near Broadway and Central Avenue. There were several apartments on the third floor.

The identity of the person killed has not yet been released and the extent of the injuries to the other tenant are also unknown. Two emergency responders, one firefighter and one paramedic, were also treated for minor injuries.

Broadway was closed in both directions for a three-block area but has since been reopened.  Crews began boarding up the house early Thursday morning Thick smoke blanketed the neighborhood during the fire and the heat damaged at least one nearby house.

The fire is not considered suspicious although it is being investigated by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office. The local Red Cross assisted four people who were displaced by the fire.

Firefighters and police from multiple communities responded to the fire.
