The Asbury Park Transformative Justice along with Help Not Handcuffs and the family of Hasani Best say they are staging a peaceful rally scheduled for Oct. 22 at 6:30 p.m. in front of the Asbury Park post office.
Organizers say there will not be a march and ask participants to attend wearing masks, bring hand sanitizer and their own water and stay six feet apart at all times. They say they have organized the rally because 996 people in the United States were killed by police in 2019.
They are also protesting the killing of Hasani Best by city police earlier this year when there was a standoff between police and Best at a city apartment.
In a list of demand the organizers wrote:
1. We demand that Officer Sean Deshader immediately be fired for the murder of Hasoni Best.
2. We Demand that Officer Sean Deshader immediately be charged with murder!
3. We demand that Asbury Park creates a long-lasting Citizen Review Board to make sure our community enforces consistent police accountability.
4. We demand that money be relocated from the Asbury Park City Budget from the police and be redistributed to social services, community needs and housing.
