For the fifth consecutive year, the Rotary Club of Asbury Park will host Wreaths Across America.
A nation-wide event, it was established to honor service members from all seven branches of the military, first responders and POWs.
Volunteers place a wreath at the tombstone of the fallen and say aloud the name and branch of service of the service member. According to Wreaths Across America, “When we say their name out loud, they are never forgotten.”
A service of remembrance will be held at Veterans Memorial Park in Neptune Dec. 16 starting at noon and will be followed immediately by the laying of the wreaths at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Diane French, daughter of a WWII POW, as well as Bernadette Sherman, a Gold Star Mom will share messages. The colors will be presented by the Neptune High School ROTC. Additional participants are VFW 1333, VFW 226 and Girls Scout Troop 902
According to Dina Blackwood, event chair, “We need to honor all those who sacrificed, whether they were a line cook, a medic or served on the front lines. They left everything they knew behind to go into the unknown and serve our country.”
The public is welcome. Wreath sponsorships are still available. Donate online at www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/NJ0146P or by mail at Wreaths Across America; Rotary Club of Asbury Park; PO Box 512, Asbury Park, NJ 07712
