Asbury Park’s newest employee is Sylvia Sylvia Cioffi who started work this week as the Urban Enterprise Zone director.
Deputy Mayor Amy Quinn said she was hired by City Manager Lilly Nazzaro and as an administrative appointment does not need approval by the City Council.
Quinn called Cioffi an “excellent appointment” and pointed out that through her experience as executive director of the Asbury Park Chamber of Commerce she already knows 75 percent of the businesses in the city.
The position has been vacant for several months.
Businesses are urged to join the UEZ to create private sector jobs, take advantage of the 3 1/2% state sales tax, make tax-free purchases, and benefit from the Business Assistance Programs offered in the local Urban Enterprise Zone.
Cioffi was the executive director of the Asbury Park Chamber of Commerce chamber for eight years before leaving that post to accept the new position. Matt Whelan, the assistant director, has been named the new director.
Cioffi is a former member of the Ocean Township Board of Education and a current member of the state Board of Education.
At the Rock and Roll for Recreation event at the Stone Pony Cioffi was honored for her service to the city.
She is a member of the Asbury Park Rotary and volunteers for the Asbury Park Recreation committee.
