Summer is almost here and looking for those perfect beach books has been a rite of reading passage for fellow bookworms. From page-turning thrillers to pitch-perfect memoirs, the months of May through August offer some great reading material.
Local reading aficionados were asked to share what they intend to be reading at the beach or while lounging poolside.
Asbury Park resident Judy Moroney said that she “absolutely loves” a good beach read and since she lives in a beach town it is “the perfect excuse” to go down to the sand and set up shop with her beach chair and an iced coffee.
“I feel like there is not enough time for me to read. There are so many books to choose from but so far the ones I have picked out to read are “Same Time Next Summer” by Annabel Monoghan and “The Five Star Weekend” by Elin Hildebrand. “
She said she believes they will both be good beach reads because they have family and friendship drama.
“ I like these types of storylines,” Moroney said. “I will start reading as soon as school is over.”
Neptune resident Ella Collins said she likes to browse the books at local stores or libraries to select good reads. One book she plans to read is by Ann Napolitano.
“I have some of her other books. Now I want to read “Hello Beautiful. “ It is one of Oprah’s Book Club reads. It’s about a family rift that changes their lives for generations. I like to read books about family dramas. I get drawn into their characters when it involves family,” she said.
Jay Bonanno of Ocean Township said he favors reading books about politics. On his radar this summer is “The Situation Room” by George Stephanopoulos.
“It’s a book about the White House Situation Room. It shows readers what was taking place in the room for 12 presidents. What happened during 9/11 and during the raid on Osama Bin Laden. It is going to be a very interesting read,” he said.
Laura Myers, library technologist at Neptune Public Library, said that the most popular authors at the library currently as we near the summer months are Danielle Steel, Kristin Hannah, Colleen Hoover and James Patterson.
“Everybody’s likes are different but James Patterson and Colleen Hoover are really prolific,” she said. “They know what people like and they write it. Danielle Steel readers like to read her books over and over again. Kristin Hannah writes really compelling stories. Every time we get these authors books they have wait lists. We order popular titles that our patrons are interested in,” she said.
Carolyn Heming of Long Branch said she plans to read as many books as possible this summer. She enjoys reading biographies of famous people.
“I am going to read ‘The Life and Times of Barbara Walters’ and Tom Selleck’s memoir ‘You Never Know.’ Summer is the best season for reading. More free time, more fun and less stress,” she said.
