Keith Cafferty

Neptune Township Committeeman Keith Cafferty has submitted his resignation.
Cafferty, who previously served as mayor and deputy mayor, was re-elected last year to a full term and sworn in Jan. 1. His resignation will be effective Sept. 30.
“Over the summer, a member of my immediate family had a critical medical event,” Cafferty said. “My focus is on the long recovery road ahead of us and I can no longer give the township the time and focus it needs.”
The committee announced Cafferty was taking a leave of absence at the beginning of September. No details were provided and Township Attorney Gene Anthony made clear that Committee members were afforded time away for a variety of acceptable reasons. Cafferty’s letter notifying the township was received Sept. 18.
Cafferty’s departure is the third from the committee since November 2023. The late Dr. Michael Brantley stopped attending meetings last year due to medical reasons and was removed from the committee. He died Jan. 6, 2024. Committeeman Kevin McMillan was appointed to Brantley’s seat.
Committeeman Nicholas Williams also stepped down due to health issues in late January 2024. Committeeman Derel Stroud was sworn in to replace Williams a month later.
Both MacMillan and Stroud were selected from a group of nominees put forward
by the township Democratic Party. After winning their primaries in the spring, McMillan and Stroud will face Republican challengers Rachael Stolte and Jessica Ford during the general election Nov. 5.
