The Ocean Township High School girls gymnastics team is among the best in the Shore Conference.
The Spartans won 10 of their first 12 meets en route to first place in Class B North at 8-0.
“They are seasoned gymnasts who came into the season prepared and ready to compete at their highest levels,” fifth-year coach Nicole Farina said. “They worked hard during practices, challenging themselves with difficult skills and routines. I knew we had a special team before the season started. We had great success last year and I knew it would continue because of our amazing gymnasts and their dedication to our team’s goals.”

“Sadie has been on fire since the start of the season and is completing consistent high level routines,” Farina said. “She competed in the all-around last season. She is a committed and dedicated gymnast who displays a strong work ethic. She has passion for the sport and endeavors to go higher in her abilities. We can always count on Sadie to do her best and help the team succeed. Her abilities, confidence and high level routines make her an exceptional all-around competitor.”
Sophomore Brooke Schneider posted two first-place all-around finishes, four wins on bars, five wins on beam and nine triumphs on floor.
“Brooke is an incredibly talented gymnast who sets high goals for herself,” Farina said. “She came into this season prepared and motivated to achieve her goals. She works hard for our team as well as outside of school. Her routines have a beautiful display of artistry, combining grace and flexibility. Last year, we noticed her high level skills and ability in all four events. Her teammates are inspired by her abilities. She assists in motivating the team to be at its best.”
Senior Emma Bonforte captured one first-place all-around finish, 10 wins on vault, one win on beam and one win on floor.
“Emma has a strong work ethic and is confident in her abilities,” Farina said. “She started the season with strength, flexibility and endurance, which allowed her to perform at a high level. She completes high level skills with ease. She has developed into a phenomenal gymnast. She competes in all events as an all-around competitor. She sets high goals for herself and works hard to achieve them. She continues to challenge herself by obtaining qualifying scores in all events.”
Bonforte began her varsity career as a freshman.
“Since her freshman year, she has demonstrated outstanding dedication to the sport and her teammates,” Farina said. “She was always one of the hardest working gymnasts on the team. She leads by example and has a talent for connecting with those around her. She fosters a sense of camaraderie among her teammates. As captain, she encourages and supports her teammates while having fun along the way. She is having an awesome senior year, especially on vault and floor, scoring in the 9’s. ”
Farina said Bonforte, who also competes in lacrosse during the spring, is a strong leader.
“She displays a strong work ethic on and off the mat,” Farina said. “Not only does she excel at leading practices, but also takes charge of organizing meets and planning team dinners. She is a diligent student who excels academically while balancing her athletic commitments. These qualities make her a great asset to our team.”
Bonforte has qualified for the Shore Conference and sectional tournament each season.
“She has a natural talent for gymnastics,” Farina said. “She consistently exhibits solid routines as an all-around competitor. Emma has always been open to trying new skills and perfecting them. She has shown strong personal growth. She brings positivity to the gym and encourages her teammates to be their best. She plans on going to college, majoring in Marine Biology and minoring in Studio Arts. She will compete in club gymnastics and beach volleyball.”
Farina said Bonforte does not rattle.
“She knows how to handle her nerves,” Farina said, “The reasons for her success this season are her hard work and dedication. She has fun and always tries her best. She has shown improvement in her consistency and strength and in producing solid routines. It has truly been a pleasure having Emma on our team during these past four years.”
The Spartans have also received contributions from seniors Brielle Castellano and Kaylei Castellano, juniors Alexandra Revolinsky and Jackie Smith, sophomores Addison Paulson, Briana Pugielli and Alexia Tapia-Caicedo and freshmen Hayanna Rodrigues, Kalliope Sarrinikolaou and Kayla Smith.

She is a hard worker who motivates and supports her team. She has shown great improvement this season and competes with ease and gracefulness. We look forward to her continual growth in the upcoming years.
“Kalli has impressed us with her powerful vaults and beautiful beam routine. She is a very talented, skilled gymnast who competes at a high level. Jackie Smith has shown great improvement on vault and bars. Brielle and Kaleigh are supportive and encourage their teammates to do their best during practices and meets. The girls go out of their way to make sure the meets run smoothly and are always ready to lend a helping hand.”
Bonforte said the team has a ritual.
“When meet day comes, the team is constantly finding new ways to bond and boost energy,” she said, “but some of the rituals date back to my freshman year and earlier. When our warm ups are finished and everyone is getting ready to walk out on the floor, we start with circling up and doing our booty bumps. We do one for the number of the meet and one for good luck. We walk in and after announcements we get into another circle, say our motto, wish good luck to the other team and sometimes the other teams and pray for a good meet.
“We always do a swoosh after our group cheer. It is almost like a wave between all of us, representing Ocean. The team did not always say a prayer before its meets, but this year Brooke decided to start it and it obviously has helped us! We always pray for a good meet and well being.”
Farina said the team is a pleasure to coach.
“The girls make the team fun to coach,” she said. “Everyone enjoys being together and cheering each other on. I am a very positive person and I coach that way as well. Coach (assistant Karen) Dunn and I create a positive environment, encourage teamwork and give positive feedback. We support the girls by encouraging them to have fun, show off their talent and do their best! As a team, we set goals, support each other and have a good team culture.”
