New Kiwanis Club President Deena Cohen presents check to Asbury Park Youth Football Coach Will Johnson.
When the Asbury Park Kiwanis Club heard that the Asbury Park Youth Football program was in danger of shutting down because of a lack of money, they immediately sprang into action and started a fund raising effort to keep the football team on the field. They told the story in an email to their members and friends.
“Approximately $20,000 in donations is desperately needed to preserve the team. We must bring to bear the resources required to keep these 12 year old boys off the streets and out of trouble in a football program that is 100 percent committed to setting a course for their lives. Frankly, relying exclusively on coaches and volunteers to fund the team is no longer a viable long-term solution.”
So far, they’ve raised $1,900 toward their goal. The money is needed for new (not used) helmets, fresh uniforms, viable footballs, practice field access, and the means to travel to regional and national competitions The team qualified for a championship game last year, but the financial backer reneged on the offer and they couldn’t make the trip
