Although James Bradley founded and developed Asbury Park in 1871, what was the area like at that time? From whom did he purchase the land and why?
The Asbury Park Museum is hosting Edge of the Waters: From the Lenape “Scheyichbi” to Bradley’s Founding of Asbury Park, from 2 to 4 p.m., Dec. 14 at Trinity Episcopal Church Sanctuary, 503 Asbury Ave.
Join Museum Founder Kay Harris, Historian and Author Rick Geffken, and Sand Hill Indian Association Founder Claire Garland for a journey back to the great eastward migration some 3,000 years before the first European settlements.
They will discuss how the Lenape (original people) established themselves as the first inhabitants of this coastal territory – their Scheyichbi (shay-ICK-pee) lands, meaning Edge of the Waters.
Attendees will also be introduced to the areas’ first families – the Potters, Whytes and Drummonds – who settled in the Asbury Park area beginning in the 1600’s and the contributions that their descendants had on Asbury Park’s growth and development.
Free admission and refreshment will be served.
