The Asbury Book Cooperative has officially received 501(c)(3) nonprofit status from the Internal Revenue Service. This designation marks a significant milestone for ABC, enabling it to further its mission of promoting literacy and cultural enrichment in the community.
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, ABC is now eligible to receive tax-deductible donations to the extent allowable by law, increasing its ability to support a range of programs aimed at making books and reading more accessible to all. ABC plans to expand its cultural initiatives, including more free community events, author readings, book clubs, and literacy outreach for local schools and underserved populations.
“This is an exciting moment for us,” said Michael Newton, manager of the bookstore. “Achieving 501(c)(3) status allows us to take our mission to the next level, empowering us to do even more for our community. We’re deeply grateful to all our supporters.”
Founded in 2019, the Asbury Book Cooperative is a volunteer-run, non-profit located at 644-A Cookman Avenue in Asbury Park. The mission is: to promote literacy, provide access to books for all, and create a welcoming gathering space for the arts and community. They sustain the efforts through the sale of new and used books and merchandise, and through the generous support of members and donors who share the passion for independent bookstores.
