The Boys and Girls Clubs of Monmouth County is scheduled to welcome Arshay Cooper—author, motivational speaker, and inspiration behind the award-winning film “A Most Beautiful Thing” for an event at the clubhouse in Asbury Park April 10 at 4 p.m.
Cooper’s bestselling memoir, “A Most Beautiful Thing,“ chronicles the story of the first all-Black high school rowing team in the United States, formed in Chicago’s West Side. The book and its film adaptation highlight the team’s transformative journey and the powerful impact of sports in fostering personal growth, resilience, and unity.
As a national advocate for youth empowerment and inclusion, Cooper has shared his story with audiences ranging from members of Congress to the NBA and WNBA, the NAACP, the Obama Foundation, and professional sports organizations. His message of breaking down barriers and expanding opportunities has inspired countless young people across the country.
The club’s Youth Indoor Rowing Program, launched by Asbury Park resident Polli Schildge in partnership with Interfaith Neighbors and the Monmouth University Women’s Rowing Team, is now in its second year. This initiative provides kids in Asbury Park and surrounding neighborhoods the chance to engage in rowing every Friday afternoon, with plans for eighth graders to row on the water again this summer.
Arshay and his work have been featured in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, LA Times, and the Today Show.
This event is open to the public, and all are welcome to hear Cooper’s story and learn more about the opportunities available for youth in the community.
The Asbury Park Clubhouse is located at 1201 Monroe Ave, Asbury Park. Contact Polli Schildge for more info: polli.getupkeepmoving@gmail.com
