Asbury Park has received a $250,000 Monmouth County Municipal Open Space Grant for improvements to Sunset Lake and Springwood Avenue Parks.

“We are thrilled to be a recipient of the Monmouth County Municipal Open Space Grant,” City Councilwoman Eileen Chapman said. “Our residents, now, more than ever, need access to our parks to support their mental and physical health, and we are incredibly thankful to the Monmouth County Board of Commissioners for giving us this opportunity to upgrade them.”

The Question is…

Monmouth County awarded a total $3.47 million in grants to parks in 23 municipalities through the 2020 MOSG program.

“This is an important development in the continued improvement of the Springwood Avenue Historic Corridor thanks to the Monmouth County Board of Commissioners,” Councilwoman Yvonne Clayton said. “Springwood Avenue Park already serves our community as a wonderful gathering place and the addition of a shaded covering to the stage will only enhance the experience for residents.”

Sponsored by the Monmouth County Board of Commissioners, the MOSG program is the primary method in which the County assists local recreation departments. This program provides vital funding to municipalities in order to meet needs relating to open space acquisition, recreation and historic conservation.

The grant will be used to make upgrades in both Sunset Lake and Springwood Avenue Parks, with work expected to begin in 2021. Improvements to Sunset Lake Park will concentrate on the area of the park between Main Street and Bond Street and will consist of regrading to improve draining and eliminate ponding, walkway improvements, lighting improvements, and trimming/pruning of the tree canopy. Improvements in Springwood Park will include the addition of a shaded covering for the open stage area.
