An Amazon distribution center has received approval from the Ocean Township Planning Board to move into the second story of the former Sears building at Seaview Square Shopping Center.
Called an Amazon Fulfillment Center, it is the final destination for packages before they are delivered. Customers will also be allowed to come to the center to pick up their packages.
The Planning Board gave final approval for the project at the Feb. 22 meeting. Mayor Christopher Siciliano said it is expected to be up and running by October in the 93,000-square-foot building.
“I think this is a win-win for our town. It will create hundreds of jobs, create a good, steady tax ratable, and fill a building that has been empty for several years. More people are shopping online and the township can’t lose, really,” he said.
“That building has been a white elephant and this project will fill it up. Plus, there is plenty of parking to accommodate it. We are just waiting for it to open and then it’s rock and roll time- it’s all very exciting,” he said.
An At Home store currently occupies the lower floor and is expected to remain.
