Traffic striping on Asbury Park streets will cost much less in the new year after the City Council decided to contract with a new company which charges only $1 per foot as opposed to the former company which charged $5 to $7 for the same service.

Also downtown alley ways will now have names, making it easier for police and fire departments to respond. It will also allow Amazon to deliver goods to certain addresses which they were having trouble finding.

The alleys were all given names of historic buildings in the city, including Albion, Charms and Mayfair.

Free aid for those filing income tax will be available at the Asbury Park Library on a walk in basis from Feb. 2 to Feb. 14.

The Neptune Township Council is holding a diaper drive during the month of February to replenish supplies that were destroyed in a fire at a local food pantry. Diapers may be dropped off at the firehouse, the library, municipal hall and the senior center.

Council plans to discuss options for banning smoking on city beaches. Allowing smoking on the boardwalk but not beaches will be part of the discussion.

Council members were asked to bring their opinions to future meetings with the hope of introducing an ordinance in February of March so it can be implemented before the start of the summer season.

Deputy Mayor Amy Quinn cautioned council that “smoking is not illegal” so allowing it on certain beaches or areas should be considered.

Council is also seeking members for its new Green Team, as part of the Sustainable Jersey initiative. The team will be able to apply for grant funding for renewable energy projects.
