Asbury Park’s Recreation Committee is preparing for its first Family Fun Barbecue which will take place on Sat., May 11 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Springwood Park, located at Springwood and Atkins Avenues.
Rain date is May 18.
The event, which welcomes all families—including those raising a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder, will feature food, music, arts and crafts, and outdoor activities. Children will be able to participate in sand art, parachute games, frisbee throwing, bean bag tosses and more. The event is free to the public and all children attending must be accompanied by an adult.
The Recreation Committee is currently looking for volunteers to help provide assistance at the event, such as set-up and clean-up, hosting arts and crafts and games, and serving food.
“As Chair of the Recreation Committee, my goal is to explore new ideas and provide recreational opportunities for the diverse needs of the Asbury Park community,” said Councilperson Jesse Kendle, “We’re proud to create an event for the families of Asbury Park that also meets the needs of those raising children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Our hope is to provide an opportunity for parents to connect with each other in a non-judgmental setting—it’s important for everyone in Asbury Park to feel like a part of the community.”
“Autism Spectrum Disorder can impact a child’s ability to communicate, which may cause difficulties with social behavior. ASD is broad and can affect every child differently,” said Esther Piekarski, Recreation Committee Member and Director/Owner of Alphabets Preschool Center, “For some, recreational activities can be challenging. Providing accessible events like the Family Fun Barbecue allows families to connect and provides opportunities for children with ASD to practice social skills, develop friendships, and explore their interests.”
