A reporter from a London newspaper, the Evening Standard, paid a visit to Asbury Park recently and wrote a flattering account in the paper’s travel and leisure section on August 19 about improvements which are bringing record numbers of tourists to town.
The article found it’s way to Facebook and the Asbury Park Boardwalk page.
Reporter Paul Tierney had many nice things to say about the beachfront and downtown, while referencing Asbury Park as the formerly “down-at-heel US seaside town.”
After giving a brief history of the early triumphs and later downfalls of the city, Tierney spoke about his recent visit.
His article includes numerous pictures, including the recently painted Wonder Bar pre painting. And of course he noted Bruce Springsteen’s part in putting Asbury Park on the global map.
Tierney notes the striking difference between Asbury Park and New York City just 60 miles apart calling it “palpable.”
Not really a fair comparison, as people who have been to both surely know.
But then he talks of the changes and the hope that this city by the sea “will rise phoenix-like from the flames of regeneration.”
The author also mentioned the big name stars who have played at the Stony Pony and Convention Hall and said he could imagine them swaggering down the boardwalk. His image of Debbie Harry eating a corn dog is a bit startling. (Read the article here.)
Asbury Park has been the subject of many top tier newspapers and magazines this year and this is just one more feather in its cap.
