The Asbury Park Historical Society pays tribute to the late Ray Sternesky with the 2021 edition of its Art Show on the Boardwalk, returning Sun., Aug. 15.
Visions from some of the Shore’s most talented artists — including works in oil, acrylic, watercolor, charcoal, pastel, photography, sculpture, and hand-made crafts — get their day in the sun Sun., Aug. 15, when the Asbury Park Historical Society presents the newest edition of The Ray Sternesky Art Show on the Boardwalk.
Back on the boards following a one-year hiatus, the event formerly known as “Art on the Boardwalk” has been re-christened in memory of Sternesky, the watercolorist, graphic designer, and longtime friend of the Historical Society who died in March at the age of 85.
Having retired to Asbury Park with his wife, APHS trustee Dolly Sternesky, in 2000, the veteran visual artist quickly became a fixture on the beach and boardwalk; sketching, painting, and documenting the iconic features of his adopted seaside home during a time of rebirth, renewal, and resurgence for the renowned resort. Among Ray’s signature works is a series of banners celebrating the city through its best-known landmarks, a complete collection of which remains on permanent display inside the Asbury Park Senior Center at Springwood and Atkins Avenues.
A cross-section of creative people, several of them new to the summertime staple fundraiser for 2021, will offer their wares for display and sale between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. during the event that pitches its tents along the Asbury Park boardwalk, stretching south from the Fifth Avenue entrance to Convention Hall. Coordinated by the Historical Society’s events co-chair Teddy Chomko, the art show is a colorful bazaar that represents a great “shopportunity” for all those searching for a unique gift idea, or a truly one-of-a-kind addition to the home.
Going forward, the Ray Sternesky Art Show on the Boardwalk will continue to honor its namesake, an artist, and aficionado of all things Asbury Park who was an active and engaged participant in each yearly event. For more information go to info@aphistoricalsociety.org.
