An event is being held on St. John’s Island at Sunset Lake on Sun., May 20 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. to raise funds for the rebirth of the island.

The Sounds on St. Johns event is being held on the island located in Sunset Lake off Grand Avenue between Fifth and Sunset Avenues.

Suggested donation for the event, which is sponsored by the Sunset Lake Conservatory, is $25.

Music will be provided by Summer Series Performers who will be performing at Music Mondays in Springwood Park, AP Live on the Boardwalk and AP Concert Band on the Boardwalk.

Participants are invited to enjoy an afternoon of hot music and cool refreshments.

Wendi Glassman, chair of the Sunset Lake Conservatory, said the island has been cleaned up recently and new plantings and benches have been added.

“In immediate terms, the city is repairing the steps, pillars and light fixtures at the base of the staircase,” she said.

Glassman said additional steps will be taken as a Master Plan for the park is developed and she is hoping to make more people familiar with the island.

“In holding our event here, we are introducing many people to the beauty and serenity of the island,” she said. “This is also a rebirth in that we are bringing back music and socials to the island, which always was a significant part of the activities on the island historically. People often held weddings, ice cream socials and other celebrations and concerts on the island.”
