The Asbury Park Planning Board at a virtual meeting Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. will review and may take formal action on the application by Asbury Partners, LLC to build a proposed beach club on the boardwalk at Seventh Avenue.
The hearing is a continuation of the application and prior board meetings may be watched on APTV at www.asburyparktkv.com/city-meetings/planning-and-zoning.
Asbury Partners has presented plans to construct a one story beach club pavilion on the property. The facility will include a swimming pool, cabanas, restrooms and lockers. There will also be a kitchen, outdoor food area and a partial rooftop deck.
The application has been reviewed by the Technical Review Committee and the City Council earlier this year. It was found to be consistent with the Waterfront Redevelopment Plan by both panels. The club will have an entrance to the boardwalk allowing beach access.
Asbury Partners has previously asked for approval to deviate from design guidelines in the agreement for windows, the wooden facade, allowing colored storefront glass and foregoing window sills.
The group has since revised the architectural plans to comply with the Waterfront Redevelopment Plan.
At a previous public meeting held at Asbury Park High School in November to accommodate a larger crowd, many residents voiced concerns about the private club being exclusive and citing the city’s past racial tensions wanted a more inclusive club on the boardwalk.
Many who spoke addressed concerns about the effect on the environment, especially run off into Deal Lake, if it is a chlorine pool.
The chair of the Deal Lake Commission, Don Brockel said he was more concerned with the runoff from a nearby parking lot which was to be paved.
He cited gasoline and oil drippings from cars and asked if a filtering system would be installed to filter the runoff before it reached the lake.
