Acting upon the city-wide parking consultant report submitted by Desman Associates, the Asbury Park City Council has implemented a number of different initiatives to better manage the city’s parking resources.
“The first step was to increase parking capacity in the City by 450 spaces. To that end we worked with our developer and State partners to increase our parking capacity in the short term for this summer season. Getting 450 spot online in such a short time period is a testament to our commitment to finding solutions to parking concerns as they arise,” explained Deputy Mayor Amy Quinn.
Details of the parking space increase include:
1. In the Central Business District (CBD) parking capacity was increased by 25 percent with the addition of 266 spaces. That increased the total number of CBD spaces from 582 to 773.
– 100 of those CBD spaces are located at the Municipal Parking Lot on Main Street adjacent to City Hall. This lot was recently paved and striped and is open for both public parking and Zone 4 residential/employee permit parking from 5 pm to 9 am Monday through Friday and 24 hours a day on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
– 91 of those spaces are in the iStar owned and privately operated Lake Avenue parking lot. This lot will open this week.
2. In the waterfront area 193 spaces will be added in two iStar owned lots coming online this summer. The lot on Seventh Avenue and Kingsley will open on Thurs., July 2. The lot on 1stAvenue and Kingsley will open by mid-July.
“Adding spaces is only one step. We’ve also made minor changes to the parking ordinance to better manage parking in the short-term. Over the next six months we will be working with concerned residents, business, and parking professionals to improve and better manage a citywide parking system,” said Councilman Joe Woerner.
Additional changes to the existing parking ordinance, beyond the addition of the Municipal Lot and the Bangs Avenue Garage, include:
1. No rate changes for 2015.
2. Permit parking for Zone 4 and 2 will be extended on Lake Avenue one block east, between Grand Avenue and Heck Street.
3. Press Plaza (Emory Street between Cookman Avenue and Lake Avenue) will be open to public parking only.
4. Eliminate guest permits in all zones.
5. Employee permits in Zone 4 will be issued to a maximum number of 300.
Noteworthy permit parking rules:
Residential, employee, and guest permit holders are allowed to park in the following zone 4/CBD areas only:
