A new bicycle/pedestrian path along the Shark River, paid for with state and federal funding, will soon connect sections of Shark River Hills in Neptune with nearby Wall Township and Neptune City.

The two-mile South Riverside Drive Bicycle and Pedestrian Path will go from the Brighton Avenue Bridge area in Wall, head north and link up with S. Riverside Drive in Neptune’s Shark River Hills section, head east along the Shark River and then loop back to the Brighton Avenue bridge area.

The $477,750 project, estimated to begin next year and possibly continue into 2022, is funded through grants from the state Department of Transportation and the federal Transportation Alternatives Program.

“This project has been on the drawing board for a while. The bike/pedestrian path will basically share the existing streets lanes in the shoulder area and have lane signage and symbols,” Neptune Engineer Leanne Hoffman said.

There will also be two “vista points” along the path, with benches and bike racks, that will allow people to walk on short piers out into the Shark River.

“It will allow people to stop and enjoy the river,” Hoffman said.

The contract for the project was awarded to Albert Marine Construction, Inc., based in Waretown, on Dec. 21.
