The Jersey Shore is getting a merciful break from the clammy heat we’ve suffered most of the past month. As July starts to give way to August – and perhaps the Dog Days of Summer – we thought it would be a good time to ask folks, “What do you do to beat the heat?” Click on any picture for beat-the-heat tips:
Kay Worrell, Ocean Grove & Mary Alice Smith, Seabrook Village – We go to Days to have good ice cream. We take walks by the ocean. Kay puts her feet in the water. Mary’s too old to put her feet in the water. Mary walks her dog, Jack, to keep cool.
Dave Cottrell, Asbury Park – Basically, I hydrate all the time. I try to stay out of the boiling sun. Air conditioning with moderation. I don’t like it too cold.
Jackie Felline & Cassie Di Maggio, Middletown – We go to the beach. We hang out by the pool. Drink iced coffee. Lately, it rains everyday, so we haven’t had to deal with it. Basically the heat doesn’t change our routine.
Beth Foderaro, Georgie’s – I’m a landscaper, so I’m out in the heat a lot. I drink a lot of liquids and wear a hat. I find shade during the heat of the day. Stop by well air-conditioned Georgie’s and have a cold, frosty one. That’ll keep you cool.
Lisa Freeman & Bill Fox, Westchester, NY – Instead of hot coffee for breakfast, we have iced tea. We’ve been eating light. Cold octopus salad at the Daphine Grille for dinner last night. Delicious. We visit the Jersey Shore to keep cool. We jog in the morning before it gets too hot.
Nyi Williams & Jahborn Garrett, Neptune – Nyi: I stay in the central air, or I stay under the gazebo in my backyard. There’s a fan and TV in there. Jahborn: I get in the pool in my backyard. From the pool to the a.c. in the house.
Karen Golden & Hilary Brugger, Ocean Grove – Karen: I don’t have it on today, but I have a neck ice cooler. You soak it for a half hour in cold water and wear it. I bought it in the outback in Australia. It’s better than nothing. Other than that, suck it up and deal with it. We have no control over the weather. Hilary: I don’t do much. We really don’t stay cool. Drink a lot of water and stay near the fans. Live near the ocean, like Ocean Grove.
Bob Kennedy, Neptune – Sit under the air conditioner. I have two overhead fans in all. It helps. I stay out of the sun. Sometime being in the sun is unavoidable, but I try to avoid it.
Alli Kennedy, Asbury Park Roastery – Iced coffee…
Ken Oplinski, Jersey Shore Rescue Mission – Wear light clothes. Drink plenty of water. And take some time off. Go on vacation. I just got back from vacation and I’m going again. In Europe they take the whole month of August off. Siesta time. A lot of siesta time. Visit the local restaurants on the water. Support the area.
Sunny Singh & Jimmy Patel, Pathway Market – We keep it cool here at the Pathway Market. We drink a lot of water. We don’t get a chance to go to the beach, but if you get the chance, the beaches are open in Ocean Grove. And they are very nice. The beaches are cool and clean.
Emily Whaley, Nagle’s – I buy paper towels and Gatorade. I go to the Ocean Grove beach. When I’m not there, I stay in air conditioning. Pools, too.
