Asbury Park Police Chief Mark Kinmon is scheduled to retire Sept. 1, according to a city official.
On June 30 City Manager Jack Kelly confirmed that Kinmon will be retiring after 27 years in the police department. He did not say who will replace him.
“We have not made that decision yet on who will be leading the police department. We have the option to study if we will have a new chief or appoint a police director instead,” he said.
Anthony Salerno, who has been on the force for 26 years, was recently appointed as the new Deputy Police Chief.
Kelly praised Kinmon for his leadership and always going the extra mile.
“I think residents of this community have been fortunate to have Mark as their police chief. He has a lot of integrity and an outstanding work ethic. He has honestly made an unselfish commitment on many, many occasions where he put the city before anything else. He is always out in the community, even on nights and weekends and I wish him well on his retirement,” he said.
Kinmon could not be reached for comment. He has been on the police force for 27 years, with about six of those as chief. He previously worked for two years with the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office. Kinmon had planned to retire last year but then decided to stay another year.
