A suspended Neptune police sergeant has forfeited his post and future public employment after pleading guilty last week to impersonation/identify theft, announced Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni.

Matthew G. Webb, 38, a sergeant and 13-year veteran of the Neptune Police Department, pleaded guilty June 12 to one count of fourth-degree impersonation/identity theft before Monmouth County Superior Court Judge Ellen Torregrossa-O’Connor. As part of his plea agreement, Webb forfeited his position with the police department and any future public employment in the state of New Jersey. Additionally, the plea agreement calls for a sentence of probation but permits Webb to apply for admission to the Pre-Trial Intervention (PTI) program.

Webb is scheduled for sentencing before Judge Torregrossa-O’Connor on Aug. 16.

When pleading guilty, Webb admitted that on Feb. 5 he used information obtained through the Criminal Justice Information Service database in order to contact a woman through a Facebook account he set up in a fake name. He acknowledged he was on duty when he contacted the woman and that he did so, not for any law enforcement purpose, but for his own personal benefit.

The case is assigned to Monmouth County Assistant Prosecutor Melanie Falco, director of the Office’s Professional responsibilities and Bias Crimes Unit.

Webb is represented by Giovanna Giampa of Passaic.
