An Asbury Park resident has been arrested and charged with hospitalizing a man by striking him in the head with a brick earlier this week, Acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Lori Linskey said this week.
Eduardo Martinez, 51, is charged with first-degree attempted murder and third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
Shortly before 2:45 a.m. on Tuesday, an Asbury Park police officer was on patrol when he spotted an adult male lying prone on the steps of the Jersey Shore Adult Day Care building on the 600 block of Main Street, according to the preliminary investigation.
Upon making contact, the officer noted that the male, a 68-year-old Ocean County resident, was bleeding heavily from the head and unable to speak. The victim was rushed to a local hospital, where he received emergency treatment for severe head injuries.
A joint investigation into the brutal attack was then launched by the Asbury Park Police Department and the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office. As a result, police were able to identify Martinez, and he was located and taken into custody without incident, pending a first appearance and detention hearing to take place in Monmouth County Superior Court.
The case is assigned to Assistant Prosecutor Matt Bogner of the Prosecutor’s Office’s Major Crimes Bureau, with the Asbury Park Satellite Office. Information on Martinez’s legal representation was not immediately available.
Anyone with information about this matter is asked to contact Detective Christopher Guy of the Prosecutor’s Office at 732-431-7160 or Asbury Park Police Department Detective Lemar Whittaker at 732-774-1300.
