Father Andrew Eugenis (right) was sworn in as Ocean Township’s first police chaplain last week. He is pictured with Michael Sorrentino (left), and Eduardi Segarra III (seoond from left) who were promoted to the rank of lieutenant and Police Chief Steven Peters.

Father Andrew Eugenis, of St. George Greek Orthodox Church, was sworn in last week as the Ocean Township police department’s first police chaplain.

“Father Eugenis is a dynamic person and a great community leader and it is a great honor to have him be a part of the Ocean Township police department,” Mayor William F. Larkin said.

Larkin said Father Eugenis, who is also a chaplain with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, will offer counseling and support for the police department.

St. George’s moved from Asbury Park into a new church in Ocean Township in April 2012. Father Andrew has been the church leader for the last 12 years.

Larkin said he is very pleased to have the church in Ocean Township on W. Park Avenue.

“It is a magnificent facility. Father Andrew has been gracious enough to volunteer his time and services to police department members, township employees, and residents of the community with counseling, support and nondenominational pastoral services,” he said.

The police department also promoted sergeants Michael Sorrentino and Eduardo Segarra III to the rank of lieutenant.

Sorrentino began working in the department in 1997. He is a graduate of Monmouth University and the Monmouth County Police Academy.

He has been assigned to the motorcycle unit, is a firearms instructor, and a firearms range master. He is a member of the Monmouth County Emergency Response Team (MOCERT) where he is an Operations Team Leader.

Segarra is a former U.S. Marine who began his law enforcement career with the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office in 1994 before transferring to the Ocean Township Police Department in 1998.

He holds an Associate’s Degree from Brookdale Community College and is a graduate of the Monmouth County Police Academy. Segarra has been assigned to the motorcycle unit, is also a firearms instructor, and a member of MOCERT, where he is an Operations Team Leader.

“We are happy to have both men aboard,” Chief Steven R. Peters said.
