If you would like to help feed the needy and elderly you might want to think about signing up with the Meals On Wheels program in Ocean Township.
“It can be very rewarding to know you make a difference by knocking on a door and become the only person they will see in the course of the day. They not only get a warm meal but just a little bit of face-to-face time with someone else,” said Marion Lynch, the township’s Human Services’ Outreach Coordinator
Her office oversees the program, which operates five days a week but not on weekends. The program is done in conjunction with Interfaith Neighbors, based in Asbury Park.
“Most look forward to this daily visit and just a few minutes makes a huge difference,” she said.
Lynch said the program needs a few more people to help deliver the meals. They are delivered five days a weeks but a volunteer can pick their own days.
“You can chose your own day and some deliver on more than one day. We deliver to about 40 people every day, with a hot lunch, a bagged breakfast, and some food for the next day,” she said.
She said clients are mostly elderly, homebound people that are normally not able to get out and buy food for themselves or prepare meals on their own. .
Lynch said the daily delivery run takes about two to three hours and usually takes place between 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The deliverers use their own cars and gas.
“But there is not a lot of driving,” she said.
