The Township of Ocean Historical Museum invites all to a special installment of its Speakers Series, “Lifting the Dark Veil – Victorian Mourning Practices” in the spirit of Halloween.
It will be held in the Board of Education Auditorium, 163 Monmouth Rd. in Oakhurst on Wed., Oct 23 at 7:15 p.m.
Laurie Smith and Glenn Vogel of the Shore Antique Center in Allenhurst will share their fascinating research and eerie artifacts to illustrate how the Victorians (inspired by Queen Victoria herself) mourned their loved ones with practices that startle and amuse us today.
Laurie will cover 19th and early 20th Century rules of etiquette related to the mourning period, including jewelry, clothing and customs of the time.
Glenn will share his knowledge of Daguerreotype photography and its impact on mourning practices.
This talk is just the thing to put you in the mood for the spookiest of all holidays.
The event is open to the public and free of charge. Fear not treats, not tricks, will be served.
